Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel

This little ground squirrel, about nine inches
long including tail, lives near Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Admiral, Saskatchewan.
These squirrels can't be found anywhere near
my home in Alberta so this was a treat.

I'm not at all familiar with them but an
interesting fact I found is that they are true
hibernators and have the ability to drop their
heart rate from 200 bpm to 20 bpm
while maintaining a body temperature just
above freezing point during hibernation.

They have attractive stripes too.

Photographed on September 30, 2017.
