Zion Cemetery of Many Islands

This mostly forgotten pioneer cemetery sits in the open
prairie northwest of Walsh, Alberta and east of the
Buffalo Trail.

There is no information available but considering the
time when the area was settled and styles of markers
used it looks like it dates back to about 1920.

The original glass and metal cemetery sign is shown in
the first photo.  A handful of the graves are identified
by cast concrete or metal and glass markers but most
were originally marked by wooden crosses, most of
which decayed many years ago.  I found the remains
of only one old cross on the ground as is shown in the
fifth photograph.  Someone must have noticed the
wooden crosses rotting away and had the foresight
to install metal markers, one of which is shown in
the sixth photo, at the head of those graves.

Although untended and lost in time it's nonetheless
a beautiful spot.

Saint Mary's Anglican Church

Saint Mary's Anglican Church is located in the Village
of Empress, Alberta.  It is mostly original inside and out
and was designated a Municipal Historical Site in 2009.

Attached to a wall inside this little church was a short
written history.  You can see a photo of that written
history in the last photo of this set.

After the Rain

One afternoon along the Buffalo Trail on my way home.
A brief but intense rain storm ended with the sun breaking
through the clouds bringing the hills to life.

And for an encore there was a double rainbow.

Medicine Lodge Fire Lookout Tower

The top twenty feet is all that remains of the once
one hundred foot Medicine Lodge Fire Tower in
the Cypress Hills, Alberta.  It sits at the top
of Ferguson Hill a few miles southwest of the
Elkwater townsite.

It was built in 1967 and was in use from 1968 to
1984 at which time it was determined it did not
provide adequate coverage for the forested lands.

The tower was dismantled in 1993 with the top
portion being reassembled and set on display by
park staff in 1996.  The concrete pads that once
secured the tower to the ground can still be seen
in the photographs.

The park now uses a helicopter for fire watch.

Osborne School 1912-1955

An abandoned pioneer school southeast of
Iddesleigh, Alberta and northeast of Tide Lake.

The only information available is what's on the
school sign.  The building itself is still remarkably
straight and solid.

Saint John Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery

This cemetery is north of Prelate, Saskatchewan and
is known locally as Prelate Ukrainian Cemetery.

The only information I could find about this lovely
hilltop cemetery was on the Find A Grave website
which states that the congregation started in the
early 1920's.

I was more than pleased to discover a Ukrainian
Orthodox Cemetery in this area; it's a rare find.

The Windows at Saint Margaret's Church

The stained glass windows at Saint Margaret's
Church in the Cypress Hills of Alberta.

After the church renovation in 1992, the first
of four stained glass windows was installed in
2003 with the remaining three added in 2005.
As well as being dedicated memorials, the final
three celebrate the centennial of the formation
of Alberta and Saskatchewan as provinces.

The windows were designed and assembled by
Medicine Hat glass artist Sue Feeney and
celebrate the flora and fauna of the
surrounding area.

Windows photographed on August 21, 2017.
