Whitla Cemetery with a fresh blanket of snow.
Located north of Whitla, Alberta, a casualty of the
homesteader era. By the mid-1920s and many years of
crop failures, the homesteaders in the area were
offered the chance to leave and relocate...the majority
accepted. The cemetery remains and is maintained by
the County of Forty Mile No. 8.
I often photograph this cemetery; most notably the
cemetery gate/sign and the headstone of a child who
had a very short life. Her small gray marble
headstone, topped with dove, is a celebration
of life and loss.
Photographed on February 4, 2017.
