Our Sorrowful Mother Grotto

The Blumenfeld and District Heritage site is home to
Saints Peter and Paul Church & Cemetery, a Settlers
Memorial Cairn, an outdoor Stations of the Cross,
an outdoor altar and Our Sorrowful Mother Grotto.
This post will focus on the grotto only.

A grotto is often referred to as a shrine.

Grottoes are not commonplace structures in this area
so this was an unexpected and rewarding find.  It is
constructed of fieldstone and cement and topped by
a wrought iron cross.  Terraced steps lead to the
shrine which features an enclosed pietà of the
Virgin Mary holding her Blessed Son Jesus
after the crucifixion.

It is also known as Our Lady of Sorrows Grotto
and was built in 1936 as a plea for rain during the
drought of the thirties.  It is the destination of an
annual pilgrimage.

This heritage site is located on the open prairie
southwest of Prelate, Saskatchewan and is
visible for many miles.

Flat Valley School 1912-1941 sign

Located near Hilda, Alberta.  This sign seems to be a missing bell.
The dark horizontal band behind the sign is what appears to be
the remainder of the concrete foundation.

Unidentified School - Update

This little schoolhouse has been identified by Jenn at
West of the 5th.  All the credit for the following information
goes to her and I thank her for it.

You can see Jenn's blog here:
http://westofthefifthmeridian.blogspot.ca/

It was named Charles School and was in School District
#2555.  It was named after three school trustees of the
same name.

Charles School was the first spot in the area to host
the popular sport of baseball, although players were
soon attracted to the growing town of Nemiscam.

Unidentified School

Located on a dead end road southeast of Nemiscam, Alberta.
No information available.

A stucco finish on an old building in this area isn't so rare
and it's often in reasonably good condition.

Congregational Church and Cemetery at Gros Ventre-Tothill

Sitting atop a small hill to the northwest of
Elkwater, Alberta sit the twisted remains of the log
church.  Looking in the window one can see that the
inside had been painted green at one time.

Two grave markers stand above the tall prairie grass
in the small, fenced cemetery located northwest of
the church.  A granite memorial has been erected at
the southern end of the cemetery.

This is what remains of the Congregational Church
and Cemetery at Gros Ventre-Tothill, Alberta.  It
was sad to see it this way...but it was a bright
blue and breezy day on top of that small hill.

Tobler Family Cemetery

Southwest of Mendham, Saskatchewan and situated on a
slight rise in the surrounding prairie is the Tobler
Family Cemetery.  There is a feeling of openness and
freedom here.

The names of the eight interments, including four
babies, are listed on a centrally located granite
marker.

This cemetery is clean and simple, well tended and
cared for.

Faith Union Cemetery

Faith Union Cemetery is located south of Etzikom, Alberta.
In the early part of the twentieth century this area was
known as Gahern.

According to cemetery records available there
were 25 interments here between 1913 and 1926 with
no further burials taking place for over 80 years.  In 2008
William Eldon Peters, a co-founder of The Canadian
National Historic Windmill Centre, was laid to rest here.

Even though a rain storm was blowing in from the south,
it was still a peaceful spot...this cemetery has a
good feel to it.
